School Daze
Yesterday was Nettie's first day of Kindergarten! She was so excited she could hardly stand it. We tried to get her to bed early so that she would be rested before her first big day. However, she insisted that she needed her hair curly and so we put sponge curlers in her hair that night. At about 4 A.M. she was in our room crying that the curlers were falling out and that she couldn't sleep with them in anymore. I told her to remove them and go back to sleep, assuring her I would use the curling iron on her hair the next day. Even with the 4 A.M. interlude, she still managed to be up before my alarm went off!
On the way to school she started to get nervous. She started to worry about the fact that she isn't able to read yet and what if the teacher thought she could? When I assured her that the teacher would help her learn how to read she moved on to the next worry and then the next and then the next. Finally, we arrive at school and she blurts out "What if no one likes me!?!" Poor girl! I assured her she was a likable gal and that if she was friendly and nice she would make friends in no time.
Thankfully, once we got into her classroom and settled her in her worries faded away. Then it was my turn. I stood there knowing I needed to leave the room and let her find her place there without me but it was SO HARD! Sure, she had gone to preschool and been away from me before without any issues . . . for goodness sake, in the past I was happy to have some time to myself. But this was different, suddenly her school life was beginning and that meant she would be gone for most of the day now, five days a week, for most of the year. WOW! I managed to shuffle my way outside only to stand outside the window staring in wondering where the time had gone.
The day passed rather quickly and the younger girls and I were in the car back to school to pick her up from the big first day. She was tired and not real talkative but she did say she had a good day. She made it through her first day of Kindergarten and it was good. We are just about closing out day two of school with many, many more to follow. Some will be good, some will be great and some she'll wish she was back in bed. But through it all, I pray that God will guide her and protect her and help her to become the person He wants her to be.
Until next time, dear readers . . .
